What is Sorority Life?

Sisterhood

Coming to college, it is easy to often feel lost in the crowd and feel homesick. Joining a sorority gives you a home away from home. Women from various backgrounds with different goals and dreams come together to form deep and lasting friendships; sororities become a family that will support you throughout your college career and allow you to flourish and grow in a safe environment.
Although each sorority is unique and has its own special characteristics, there is a common thread that unites us all - sisterhood, a special bond experienced among the members of a sorority. Sisterhood is laughing and smiling through the good times and getting through the bad times together. Sisterhood is a support system like no other. During your time at VWU and even after it, sisterhood remains, because it is not four years, but for life.

Academics

Academic achievement is the first and foremost priority of all sororities. Every sorority places strong emphasis on creating an atmosphere conducive to high academic performance as well as challenging each member to live up to her highest academic potential. Each sorority implements various programs designed to assist members in their academic pursuits. Programs range from tutoring and study hours to educational programs, awards and incentives.

Leadership

As a Sorority woman at VWU, there is a wide range of leadership opportunities available. The Greek Community offers the perfect place for members to gain leadership experience and to develop their skills in areas that fit their unique interests and abilities. Leadership is an integral part of our role both on campus and in the community.  Within each chapter, women can serve as officers, committee representatives, and hold a variety of other executive and non-executive positions in areas such as philanthropy, academics, and sisterhood. Each chapter is self-governing, allowing the leaders of all positions to play an essential part in their specific Sororities. It is also very common for Sorority members to hold student leadership positions in Panhellenic and on campus.

Philanthrophy & Community Service

Philanthropy and Service are a huge part of our sorority life. Each of our chapters has their own philanthropies, both locally and nationally. Greeks also participate in organizations across campus that focus on philanthropy, service, and the community. Being a member of a sorority means having the opportunity to give back to your community. Sorority involvement provides members with more than the opportunity to simply volunteer their time, but also with the chance to work together with members of their chapter and other chapters and organizations to create a better community for everyone.

Sorority Finances

It is important for students and parents to be as informed as possible regarding the costs associated with with sorority membership. Each woman joining a sorority should be aware of the dues, fees and other expenses that are involved and consider these when making financial plans. During formal recruitment, a potential member should ask sorority treasurers about financial obligations and payment options. Each sorority sets its own fees and costs as well as payment plans.
